Habitats

Considering the number of species, ROSPA0026 Danube water course Baziaş – Iron Gates is the 3rd wetland from the Romanian sector of the Danube, after the Danube Delta and Small Island of Braila. It includes 3 habitats of a communitarian interest:

  1. 3150 Natural eutrophic lake with Magnopotamion or Hydrocharition-type vegetation; 92A0 Salix alba and Populus alba galleries 
  2. 91E0*Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae)
  3. Habitat 3150 Natural eutrophic lake with Magnopotamion or Hydrocharition-type vegetation occupies the largest surface, about 3200 ha, which is 30% of the site surface.

    • Association Lemnetum minoris Oberd. ex. T. Muller and Gors 1960 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.411 – Identified within the Calinovat Island and Gurile Nerei.
    • Association Lemo-Spirodeletum polyrhizee Koch 1960 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.411, Association includes the floating plants that are found in stagnant waters, big sheltered pools with insignificant deep down currents. The coverage area of this association include the pool within Calinovat Island and those found in Divici – Pojejena, Gurile Nerei, Tricule and  Dubova.
    • Association Hydrocharitetum morsus-ranae van Langendonck 1935 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.412, Identified at Gurile Nerei and Calinovat Island.
    • Association Ceratophylletum demersi Hild 1956 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.412, Identified within the Calinovat Island in the temporary flooded sectors.
    • Association Salvinio-Spirodeletum Slavnic 1956 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.411, These association include floating and submerse vegetation (Hydrocharitetum morsus-ranae, Ceratophyllum demersum ssp. Demersum, Ceratophyllum submersum, Salvinia natans) from the Gurile Nerei, Calinovat Island, Divici-Pojejena pools and some areas along the Danube River. The pools and marshes are in different phases of biogenic accumulation because of the invasion of Trapa natans species, and of the input of chemical substances used in agriculture by the local people, which favour the development of abundant vegetation.
    • Association Potamogetonetum nodosi (Soo 1960) Segal 1964 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.421. This association includes floating and submerse aquatic plants with the roots on the bottom of the pools or near shore where the waters content of CaCO2 is variable. The diagnostic species are Potamogeton perfoliatum, Potamogeton crisous, Potamogeton nodosus, Myriophyllum spicatum. Found at Divici, Tricule.
    • Association Polygonno-Potametum natantis Soo 1964 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.4315, Ostrovul Moldova Veche, Pojejena.
    • Association Trapetum natantis Karpati 1963 (PAL. CLASS.): 22.4312, These associations find good ecological conditions in all the pools or lakes from Moldova Noua and Calinovat Islands and Divici-Pojejena. The Trapa natans species is very well represented in the Danube River, lakes, some pools, gulfs and rivers mouths.
    • Association Phragmitetum vulgaris Soo 1927 (PAL. CLASS.): 53.112, 53.111. Identified in the Danube floodplain within the Bazias – Moldova Veche sector and west of Schela Cladovei.
    • Association Typhetum angustifoliae Pignatti 1953 and Association Typhetum latifoliae Lang 1953. (PAL. CLASS.): 53.112, 53.111 Identified in the Danube floodplain within the Bazias – Moldova Veche sector.
    • Association Glycerietum aquaticae Hueck 1931(PAL. CLASS.): 53.151, Identified in the neighbourhood of Pojejena Town.
  • 92A0 Salix alba and Populus alba galleries – high importance for conservation. Identified on 80 ha between Bazias and Liuborajdea. 
  • 91E0*  Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae) 
    • Association Salicetum albae Issler 1924 s. l., Gurile Nerei, Calinovat, Divici-Pojejena, Moldova Noua
    • Salici-Populetum associations (Tx. 1931) Somsak, L. Kubicek, F., 1995, Gurile Nerei, Calinovat, Divici-Pojejena, Moldova Noua.
